pied black-and-white plumage; yellow iris; large bill (Australia; 2006-06-20)

Pied Currawong
Strepera graculina

Native Range: Australia

Notes: this species belongs to the "butcherbird" family (Cracticidae), which gets its name from the fact that many of these birds wedge their prey (such as a mouse or other food morsel) into a tree truck or fence post before dismembering and eating it; the Pied Currowong, like its cousins, generally resembles in size and behavior (but is not closely related to) crow species (Corvidae) that can be found outside of Australia in many other parts of the world.
