bold gray, black, and white patterning (California, USA; 2007-11-24)

Clark's Nutcracker
Nucifraga columbiana

Native Range: North America

Notes: an inhabitant of mountain coniferous forests, where it gathers and stores seeds in dozens of caches that it apparently remembers and returns to at later times to retrieve food; often seen flying overhead from treetop to treetop, perching in the topmost branches; distinctive plumage and bold behavior makes this gregarious species unmistakable; no sexual dimorphism.
