adult nonbreeder; note the very faint grey hood (South Africa; 2007-06-30)

Grey-hooded Gull
Larus cirrocephalus

Native Range: Africa and South America

Notes: adult has a pale-grey head, but the grey is indistinct during the non-breeding season at which time the bird in Africa can be confused with sympatric Hartlaub's Gulls because both species have dark-red bills and feet and mostly snow-white plumages underneath.

juvenile; smudgy-looking face and band on nape (South Africa; 2007-06-30)
