Native Range: North America and Middle America.

Notes: this species gets its name from the fact that the base of its bill is exceptionally and obviously wide for a hummingbird; strong sexual dimorphism with the female being plain grayish underneath; the range of this species barely extends northward into extreme southeastern Arizona in the USA.
