Native Range: South America

Notes: a dabbling duck that is the sole member of its genus; belongs to a South American lineage that also contains the Crested Duck and Brazilian Duck, two other species that likewise are placed in their own monotypic genera; the female issues a harsh barking call; inhabits forested rivers and fast-flowing streams on lower slopes west of the Andes; no sexual dimorphism.
