perches prominently in forest understory (Michigan, USA; 2006-08-22)

Eastern Wood Pewee
Contopus virens

Native Range: North America

Notes: in the USA, the eastern counterpart of the Western Wood Pewee; told from the latter by voice and range; inhabits the understory or mid-level of deciduous woods; told from Empidonax flycatchers by slightly larger size, slighty longer tail, and less pronounced eye-ring; returns to a perch repeatedly after making brief forays for flying insects; no sexual dimorphism; gete its name from its plaintive pee-wee, pee-wee song.
