Red Junglefowl
Gallus gallus

Native Range: Oriental Region

Notes: this species, native to the Oriental Region, was domesticated probably in India about 5000 year ago and it is the ancestor of all domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) now found as numerous artificially-selected breeds around the world; the original form of Red Junglefowl still exists in the wild as well as in feral populations introduced elsewhere, such as into Hawaii.
